We regularly consult guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as the Orange County Department of Public Health and the Department of Education . We remain abreast of all of the developing information, including the current status indicating a resurgence. We are committed to heeding and/or exceeding all standards for health and safety while doing everything we can to provide the same warm and embracing environment that characterizes The Hebrew Academy family.  We are committed to providing you additional updates as more information becomes available.

 

What is Distance Learning?

 

Distance learning is an alternative form of education that enables teachers to teach from an alternate site, and students to learn from home. Distance learning includes a variety of online and   offline learning activities, using a combination of online and offline resources.

  

How will the social emotional needs of our children be met during this time?

Your children’s well-being is our highest priority.  Our teachers and entire staff will make it their highest priority to ensure that students have the care and reassurance they need during this period.  We are discussing many possibilities for how we can create lightness, fun, and a sense of wellness for students during this unprecedented situation.

This document is geared to general questions that apply to all parents.  Questions about your individual child or class should be directed to your teacher directly.  We will review the questions daily and provide as much information as we can. What if I have a technical question during the day?

IT support will be available during school hours. Dedicated email addresses have been established to ensure timely responses:

What does your day look like? 
Each of our teachers will be providing a full curriculum, just as if students were at school. Each subject will be taught each day. Project work and homework will continue.  We are offering a
sample schedule for your convenience, but families will have discretion to determine the most effective schedule for their students.  We are aware that some students will be sharing access to computers.

Communal T’fillah/Prayer, daily

Lower School t’fillah - 9:00 AM

Upper School Girls davening - 9:00 AM

Upper School Boys davening  - 9:00 AM

Does distance learning require an internet connection and a computer?

YES, all students will require access to a computer and the internet. Daily lessons will be accessible from GOOGLE CLASSROOM, using student’s login and password, which can be retrieved from the teachers. 

To access Google Classroom:

Go to classroom.google.com and click Go to Classroom.

Enter your username (available from your teacher) and click Next.

Enter your password (available from your teacher) and click Next.

Families who are in need of a laptop loan can request one from Rabbi Newman rabbinewman@hacds.org while supplies last.

 

Do I have to log on to my students accounts?

YES.  Teachers will be using the Google platform, including Gmail, Google Classroom, and GoogleMeet, to provide effective lessons and to maintain connection with students.  All of your students' lessons can be accessed via one account - their student gmail account.  Students in fourth grade and above are well versed in signing on themselves.  Students in the lower grades may require support from their parents.  

 

What if I have a question and I don’t know who to ask?
Teachers and admin will be available throughout the day every day, during regularly scheduled school hours to answer any parent questions.  Since we are not able to man the phones easily, we recommend email at this point:

How will we know what our students are assigned?

All lessons will be posted on Google Classroom.

How will my students get resources and materials they need from their classrooms?
We are organizing a local drop off on Thursday at 3 different locations (Hebrew Academy, Long Beach, and Irvine) for parents to pick up resources and materials for their students.

Will my student be able to receive personalized instruction and feedback?
YES.  We are determining a number of options for individualized instruction and feedback. Using Google platform will allow teachers to comment on student work. Teachers in younger classrooms are working on strategies to support students that are not independently proficient in Google Suite.  All of our teachers will have “Office hours” when they can be available for phone calls with parents.

What if my student needs extra or additional help?
Teachers will be available for “office hours” for individual or small groups.  

Mrs. Brown, our Student Services Coordinator, will continue to provide small group and some individual tutoring by sign ups only.

Will my child be learning in “real time”?
Currently we are not scheduling “real time” learning because we are aware that many students will be sharing computer time.     

What if we want to “take a break” from learning all together, and just enjoy family time? 
Family time will likely be the most restorative and healing practice that will support you and your children.  At the same time, children thrive on routine and certainty.  Stepping back from their learning routines all together may create more uncertainty and will almost surely result in challenges for your students the rest of this academic year.  Our teachers are committed to ensuring that your student doesn’t fall behind or lose valuable learning time. Students will be expected to be caught up with the rest of their class when we resume classroom-based learning.  All teachers will be taking attendance, giving points for classwork and participation and having tests and quizzes during this time.    

How long will we be using a Distance Learning model?   
We are not yet able to say with certainty when we will be able to reinstate classroom learning.  We continue to monitor the local governing school bodies as well as the CDC recommendations and guidelines.  . We understand the profound challenges that this presents for parents and we will do everything in our power to mitigate the challenges.
