When the Classroom Has No Walls: Inside BRLHS’s Palomar Retreat

This is not how most schools would describe their classrooms, but for students at Bais Rochel Leah High School, this was the setting for learning, reflection, and growth. Recently, students returned from an extraordinary four-day retreat in one of California’s most exquisite natural environments. Nestled on Palomar Mountain, CA, the outing took place on a breathtaking 200-acre property featuring a serene lake, rustic cabins, winding trails, majestic mountains, and expansive forestland. Removed from the pace of daily life and surrounded by the beauty of Hashem’s world, the girls were given a rare opportunity to immerse themselves fully in personal reflection, connection, and Jewish growth.

From the moment they arrived, the setting itself became a powerful teacher, creating a space for learning uniquely supported by being outside the walls of a traditional classroom setting. The stillness of the lake, the openness of the trails, and the grandeur of the mountains created an atmosphere that encouraged mindfulness, presence, and depth. Being deeply immersed in nature allowed the students to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with themselves, with one another, and with their Yiddishkeit in a meaningful and lasting way.

A highlight of the retreat was the inspiring leadership of Mrs. Manya Lazaroff, who traveled from Texas to spend these days with the students. Mrs. Lazaroff, who, along with her husband, leads Chabad at Texas A&M University, brought an exceptional blend of warmth, insight, and authenticity. Through her words, activities, and personal example, she challenged the girls to reflect deeply on who they are, what they stand for, and how they can continue to grow into proud Jewish young women.

Students consistently shared that Manya’s teachings stayed with them long after the retreat ended. One student reflected on a powerful message she learned: “Everything is in Hashem’s hands. I should think about things less and try not to stress as much—He knows what He is doing.” This perspective helped many girls reframe how they approach challenges, cultivating greater trust, calm, and emotional resilience.

The program was thoughtfully structured and rich in content, balancing spiritual depth with experiential connection. Activities included multiple workshops, uplifting farbrengens, small-group sessions, hiking, bonfires, and other immersive nature-based experiences. These moments, both structured and informal, allowed the girls to slow down, be present, and connect authentically. The smaller discussion groups, in particular, created space for meaningful dialogue, honest questions, and personal reflection in a supportive environment. One student shared that she especially valued the deep conversations, noting that she “enjoyed the conversations we had—very deep, about life,” and that the retreat helped her grow closer to many of her peers.

One especially meaningful activity was the gratitude jar exercise, which invited students to affirm one another. A student shared that reading the notes written by her classmates once she returned home had a profound impact: “I discovered things about myself I didn’t even realize were recognized. A lot of people wrote the same things, which made me realize it’s probably true. Sometimes I go back and read them, and it really lifts me up.” This activity not only strengthened peer relationships but also helped students internalize a more positive, confident self-image, something that carries over into the classroom long after the retreat ends.

The farbrengens, filled with inspiration and song, fostered a sense of unity and inner motivation that resonated throughout the retreat. Many students described leaving with a noticeably different mindset. As one student observed, “A lot of people walked away with an overall mindset change—both in how they viewed their peers and the world.” Another reflected on a personal level, “I realized I have a genuine love for everyone in our high school. Even people I don’t know so well still have something special to offer.”

Mrs. Manya Lazaroff’s influence was felt deeply. Students described her as a strong, grounded role model who radiated positivity and purpose. One student shared that Manya’s overall outlook on life—recognizing that every individual has a purpose and that every action carries meaning—was deeply empowering. Through her strength and clarity, she inspired the girls to take pride in who they are as Chabad Jewish women and taught them to never underestimate their ability to make a real impact on the world.

Over the course of four days, the girls grew closer to one another, forming bonds that went far beyond friendship. They became a unified group—like a family—supporting, encouraging, and inspiring one another. The shared experiences of learning, hiking, discussing, and reflecting created a strong sense of belonging and connection that will continue long after the retreat ended.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Alevy Foundation for generously making this beautiful, sprawling resort available. Their support made this transformative experience possible and continues to strengthen Jewish education and growth for the next generation.

The girls returned home inspired and energized, fired up to continue growing and to increase their commitment to scholarship and learning. Experiences like this retreat capture the essence of what makes Bais Rochel Leah High School truly special. This year at Hebrew Academy has started with incredible momentum, and our Bais Rochel Leah High School girls are no exception. With many new faces, including our incredible Bnos team, the energy is contagious! From the first day, it’s been clear that this year is going to be one for the books—full of friendship, growth, and unforgettable moments.

One of those amazing moments? Our high school girls recently embraced a viral trend, creating a video highlighting Torah names that start with the letter 'Yud'. You can feel the joy and connection radiating through the screen! It truly celebrates the camaraderie that makes our school so unique.

At BRLHS, we don’t just teach our girls; we empower them to express themselves with creativity and enthusiasm while strengthening their Jewish identity. Moments like these remind us just how much pride we have in our students—their dedication, joy, and energy inspire everyone around them.

GRAND TRIP TO ARIZONA

High schoolers enjoyed an engaging and action packed end-of-the-year grand trip to the Grand Canyon State, Arizona.

The first stop was Phoenix, where students enjoyed some delicious Kosher food at one of the many restaurants the city has to offer. After lunch, the group set off on an arduous hike in the surrounding mountains, taking in the beautiful Arizonian scenery. Next on the agenda was Paqua Park, an inflatable waterpark located on a lake where the high schoolers got their feet wet splashing around to cool off in the desert heat.

Upon arrival at the Airbnb, the group was ecstatic to find their temporary home kitted with so many fabulous amenities including a swimming pool, tennis/basketball court, game room, and even a mini golf course. This wasn't a house, it was a mansion!

On the second day, the girls visited Sedona where they took jeep rides through the bumpy mountains. Tlaquepaque, a shopping mall full of Native American antiques, was the next pit stop. It was a lot of fun exploring the different shops and picking up some artistic trinkets. The day ended with a late-night pool party back at the crib where everyone enjoyed some delectable treats.

The following morning, the group began their final day by by visiting Medieval Times. The antiquated costumes and decorations created the illusion of stepping back in time to the Middle Ages. Top Golf was next on the agenda as the girls got to demonstrate their impressive golfing skills which was hit and miss. One final stop at the mall marked the end to a perfect trip before the girls headed to the airport to return home.

This spectacular trip, filled with fun and laughter, was the perfect way to end the school year. Memories were created which will be treasured forever.

Discovering Women of Valor:

The Navi classroom at Bais Rochel Leah High School (BRLHS) was abuzz with excitement today as our high school students presented their unique Mishlei projects. This was more than just another assignment; it was a personal exploration into the heart of the Eishes Chayil (Woman of Valor), brimming with creativity, personal connections, and inspiring narratives.

Our students were tasked with a deep dive into a specific verse (posuk) from Eishes Chayil. They didn't just read; they explored, interpreted, and connected these pesukim to their lives.

The presentations were a beautiful blend of learning and creativity. One student highlighted Sarah’s endless kindness, emphasizing how Sarah’s kindness extended even to people she did not know, drawing parallels to her own mother’s acts of generosity.

One particularly touching moment was when a student chose Mrs. Goorevitch, their Mishlei teacher, as a modern-day Woman of Valor. The tribute was heartfelt and genuine, highlighting teachers' profound impact on their students.

The students continued beyond just presenting their findings. Many embraced the extra credit challenge by dressing in period-appropriate attire. Some handed out treats that reflected their Jewish Woman of Valor, adding a personal and memorable touch to their presentations.

This project was more than just an academic exercise—it was a journey into living Eishes Chayil's values. Our students showcased not only their academic abilities but also their ability to deeply connect with and apply these lessons in their lives today.

At BRLHS,our students are encouraged to explore, express, and grow. It was a proud moment to watch them shine today. Today’s presentations celebrated learning, inspiration, and the powerful connections that bind us to our past and guide us into the future.

Production 2024

During the month of March, the Hebrew Academy's annual upper school girls production was performed much to the delight of the audience. The upper school worked tirelessly throughout the months of February and March, from drama practice to dance and choir, in order to ensure that an outstanding performance was delivered.

This year's production was Shtet'l Tevye’s Tale, a play based on Fiddler on the Roof. This story follows the lives of a Jewish man named Tevye, his wife Goldie, his daughters, and the townspeople. The production was filled with thrilling scenes, from dancing on tables to wedding speeches and heartfelt goodbyes.

It really was a one-of-a-kind production. Every girl, whether in drama, dance, or choir, put in the effort to make the show incredible by coming in on weekends, recording songs, staying late after school for rehearsals, and publicizing it to maximize ticket sales.

Of course, this all would not be possible without a few incredible people who helped behind the scenes, including Mrs. Rosenbluh, Rabbi Rappaport, and the Bnos ladies: Chelly, Chana, and Raizy.

Upper School Production

Production 2024 is finally here! At the beginning of January the girls' upper school, began to practice for the 2024 production “Shetel: Tevas Tale.” During the month of February, every girl has put in their time, and effort into the show. From dance practice in the mornings, to rehearsals during weekends, the performance is really came together.

We would like to thank all the teachers for giving class time for practice and rehearsals and all the staff involved in making sure this year's production went smoothly, from directing the girls in acting and dance, to finding times for the girls to practice, and for always making sure everything behind the scenes was running the right way. These incredible staff members include: Mrs. Rosenbluh, Rabbi Rapoport, and the Bnos, Chelly, Chana and Raizy.

Yearbook Launch

At the beginning of February, the high school girls began working on the Hebrew Academy Yearbook 2023/2024 . Firstly, they worked on picking out a theme which will be announced next month, so stay tuned.

Once the theme had been chosen, each student selected the grade and page design they wanted to work on as their contribution for the yearbook. Planning, preparations, and collaboration takes place in English class every Friday and the girls are making excellent progress.

Sophomores, Adina Shapiro and Chaya Weinbaum, have partnered up for the leadership role of Editor-in-Chief with Shulamis Kantor as the Assistant Editor-in-Chief while Esther Lovitch has volunteered to take on the Creative Director position. This incredible team, along with our Upper School English teacher, Mrs. O'Brien, has been keeping everyone in check to facilitate in making this year's yearbook the best yearbook ever!

College Tour

On 29th February, the day of the Leap Year, Mrs. Jahanfard took the Grade 11 Hebrew Academy 2024 graduating class to tour the home of the UCI Anteaters. The goal of the excursion was to get exposure to the college system. Mrs. Jahanfard started the trip with a bang by treating the girls to Starbucks.

The tour was led by a second-year biopsychology student, who had a wealth of knowledge and information to share. UCI’s many schools, modern dorms, student resources, and extensive grounds were all explored. The visitors were even treated to a story about the lore of the school mascot; the humble anteater.

Mrs. Jahanfard also ensured the girls got a picture of the Jewish life on campus by visiting Mrs. Tennenbaum, who runs the Chabad of UCI. The group also had a surprise encounter with a Hillel representative, which was enlightening. Thank you Mrs. Jahanfard for arranging this trip!

Student Council

There was much fanfare around the student council when it was first announced. Campaign posters lined the hallway and “Elect-Me” speeches were recited. Four lucky winners won the vote: Tali Weingarten, Rochi Lewkowicz, Charna Greenman, and Lila Levin.

Plans for a canteen, coffee cart, and clubs are ahead.

Student Council’s first order of business is the canteen which is launching very soon! Students will soon have options like soda, brownies, chips, snack bars, and many other delicious snacks available for purchase. Thanks to Ms. Zahoryin for facilitating this endeavor.

Sunday Dorm Life

The adventures of the dorm continued into February! The dorm dwellers hit LA last Sunday and had a ball! The Dormies immersed themselves in art, culture, and history at the Getty Villa as they explored the fascinating displays, perusing all the museum had to offer.

The Grove was the next stop where the girls enjoyed a stroll, coupled with a little shopping. A delicious dinner at LA Burger Bar marked the ending to a great day out.

Redefining Learning: Economics Musical Chairs

You walk into a classroom, expecting the usual buzz of students settled at their desks, but instead, you find them all leaving, chairs in tow. Your first thought might be, "Is this some kind of Adar prank?" where the infectious joy of Adar spills over into unexpected places.

In the backfield, our high school students prepare for a lesson on economics, removed from the confines of their usual classroom setting. It's not a break from learning; it's an immersive dive into the principles of supply and demand through the lens of a game of musical chairs. Each chair becomes a coveted prize and a practical representation of economic theories. As the music starts and stops, the scramble for chairs mimics the real-world dynamics of market economies—resources are limited, and demand is high.

Ms. Zahoryin, our upper school history teacher, embodies the spirit of innovation that BRLHS prides itself on as she begins her unit on economics. Her ability to transform abstract concepts into tangible, memorable experiences is a testament to the value she brings to our educational community. As our students laugh, the lesson transcends the game. They're not just playing; they're living the essence of supply and demand, feeling its impact in the most direct way possible.

Finals

From the 24th to the 26th of January, the high schoolers had their first Final Examinations of the year. As most of you know, the Finals can be a difficult and stressful time for both the students and teachers. From my personal experience, it was a nerve wracking but a relief when they ended. Moreover, there is a great sense of achievement knowing that all the hard work invested had paid off. It was very helpful not having any class or other school work to contend with during the exams since it makes it easier to focus on just the Finals rather than stress about submitting other work. All the teachers were very helpful and tried their best to make the Finals as stress-free as possible. The breakfast and snacks before and after the exams also contributed in making the examinations as surmountable as Finals can be.

FIELD TRIP TO LOS ANGELES

On February 1st, the high school students went on a field trip to Los Angeles to visit Ohel Chana High School. The event was to mark Chuf Beis Sh’vat, which is the Yartzheit of Rebetzin Chaya Mushka. Our amazing Bnos, Chelly and Chana, along with Ohel Chana’s Bnos, planned an amazing program for everyone. We learned a lot about Chuf Beis Sh’vat. In this program, the Chaya Mushka’s from both schools, performed a beautiful song for everyone. Following that, everyone participated in a craft activity which was very enjoyable. we all had an amazing time. After the program, students were treated to ice cream. What a delicious end to a fun day!

Student Council

Student council members, Charna Greenman, Tali Weingarten, Rochi Lewkowitz, and Lila Levin meet with Ms. Zahoryin once a month to discuss how they can make the Hebrew Academy an even better school. During the most recent meeting, a number of proposals were discussed, including the possibility of a canteen, a coffee cart, and the formation of a sports team. A new "Lost and Found" center was also considered to help ensure that mislaid items are easily reunited with the owner. Although it is far into the school year, we are especially excited about the prospect of a high school sports team so that students can learn new skills outside of school. December Dorm Life

A lot has changed since the latest update on the high school dorm. Firstly, there was a new addition to the dorm, two ducks named Harry and Meghan. Unfortunately, the beloved ducks have moved on and are now growing up in a new and improved home surrounded by many other ducks, which is a far more ideal environment.

Although time flew by with the presence of the feathery friends, the dormies continued to spend their December celebrating their Chanukah experience with 8 days of concerts, parties, and gifts. The dormies were greatly surprised with a long-awaited necessity; a printer on the first night of Chanukah.

Finally, the dormies went home over winter break and were able to kick back and relax with their family. Once they returned to their dorms, they were welcomed with a beautiful hand-lettered welcome sign which was such a sweet touch. What a heartwarming welcome back!
