Celebrating the Legacy of Hebrew Academy
Since its founding in 1969, Hebrew Academy has been a cornerstone of Jewish education—a place where academic excellence, Torah values, and a warm community converge to nurture the next generation. While time has brought new faces, innovative programs, and modern facilities, our mission has remained unwavering: to inspire students to grow as learners, leaders, and proud members of the Jewish community.
A recently rediscovered video from 1985 offers a rare and beautiful glimpse into the history of our school. Narrated by the late Congressman Tom Lantos, a Holocaust survivor and advocate for education, the video reflects the very essence of Hebrew Academy’s enduring mission. Even as we stand on the cusp of 2025, it is clear that so much of what made Hebrew Academy special then continues to define it today.
A Look Back to 1985
In the video, Congressman Lantos describes Hebrew Academy as a place where “students want to learn and educators teach with zeal and dedication.” At that time, Hebrew Academy was already known for its commitment to academic rigor and Jewish values—a vision that had started as a dream some deemed impossible.
The video captures the vibrancy of the school community, from students learning Hebrew and exploring Talmudic teachings to children discovering the wonders of science and technology. It also highlights a deep sense of Ahavas Yisroel (love for one’s fellow Jew), a value that remains integral to our school’s identity.
One particularly poignant moment comes from Veronica Galpern, a young Soviet immigrant who describes how Hebrew Academy welcomed her with open arms, teaching her English, Judaism, and pride in her heritage. Her story embodies the school’s enduring belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.
The Mission Lives On
Nearly 40 years later, Hebrew Academy has grown and evolved, yet the essence of our mission has not wavered. The dedication to academic excellence, the nurturing of Jewish identity, and the warmth of our community remain at the heart of everything we do.
Today, Hebrew Academy continues to provide a world-class education that blends tradition with innovation. From integrating advanced STEM programs to fostering spiritual growth, we remain steadfast in our commitment to equip students with the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and spiritually.
What makes Hebrew Academy truly remarkable is not just the programs we offer but the values we instill. Our students learn the importance of kindness, perseverance, and a deep connection to their Jewish heritage. They graduate with the confidence to excel in the modern world while remaining rooted in their identity.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on this rediscovered piece of history, we are reminded of the timeless dream that has carried Hebrew Academy forward since 1969. Congressman Lantos’ words ring as true today as they did in 1985: “The greatest asset of the Hebrew Academy is our children, and our second greatest asset is to dream impossible dreams.”
As we approach 2025, we remain committed to nurturing those dreams and ensuring that our students continue to thrive. The values captured in this video are not just memories of the past; they are the guiding principles that shape our present and inspire our future.
We invite you to watch this special video and celebrate the legacy that we all share. Whether you are a new family, a long-time community member, or an alum, this is a beautiful reminder of the enduring mission of Hebrew Academy.
Let us continue to build on this incredible legacy, together.
