Our Response to the Poway Incident

Sunday, 28 April, 2019 - 6:11 pm

Dear Hebrew Academy Family,

We are pained and heartbroken by the tragic shooting that took place yesterday the last day of Pesach, during Yizkor services at Chabad of Poway, California. We grieve for the family of Lori Gilbert-Kaye who lost her life and pray for the recovery of Rabbi Yisrael Goldstein, Noya Dahan and Almog Peretz  who were injured. This hate filled incident is an attack on the entire Jewish community and all civilized people.

We thank all of those who communicated with us about the incident to express their support and concern. We are grateful for the support of law enforcement both in the Poway area and locally. Our school security director works very closely with our local police departments who have been very supportive.

Safety and security at the Hebrew Academy is our utmost concern. Right before Pesach we had a drill and reviewed our security plan with the staff. Coincidentally, in the next few weeks we have planned a full reassessment of the security plan and implementation at the school with a security expert. The school has always taken the utmost precaution to ensure the safety of all the students at the Academy and we will continue to be most vigilant in the future.

Hebrew Academy prides itself as a family oriented school bringing together our community as a close knit group. Any tragic incident to one effects all. Our students have a strong Jewish identity and we will emerge out of this challenging incident with even greater pride. As the students return from vacation tomorrow, our staff will be paying special attention to any sensitivities and possible concerns of our student body.

Let us pray that G-d sends healing and comfort to the Jewish community of Poway and to Jewish communities throughout the world.

Rabbi Yitzchok Newman

Head of School

P.S. If there is any way we can be of assistance during this difficult time, please let us know.
