The Hebrew Academy is Making Waves!

Wednesday, 20 January, 2021 - 9:23 am

This month has been an exciting one in the X-S.T.R.E.A.M Lab for our Middle School scientists as we investigate the physics of sound. We began our first week with distance learning, which gave us an opportunity to do some research and gain background knowledge on our topic. We learned that sound is vibration that travels in waves, and that the speed at which it travels is variable depending on what it is traveling through. This led to the discovery that because sound needs matter to transmit the vibrations, there is no sound in outer space!

Upon returning to campus, we conducted outdoor experiments to compare the speed of sound with the speed of light, as well as to observe the Doppler effect. We investigated the science behind musical instruments, and discovered that percussion, wind and string instruments all follow similar principles of vibration and air movement. We applied what we learned to turn materials in the lab into musical instruments, and we culminated our investigation by learning how to use technology to record and edit our own musical compositions.

Finally, our students continue to learn the fundamentals of 3D design and printing. We were very excited to collaborate with Simchat Shabbat last month to donate original student-designed 3D printed dreidels to families in need just in time for Chanukah! We are grateful to be able to share our students’ wonderful work with the community, and we couldn’t do it without your support! Thank you for everything you do to support our students and our school.

With gratitude,
Mr. Shiver, X-S.T.R.E.A.M. Lab Coordinator
