A Journey Through History: Our 4th and 5th Graders Explore Sacramento
At 6:00 am, excited students and tired parents gathered in the Hebrew Academy parking lot. Luggage, backpacks, sleeping bags, snacks, smiles, and friends were ready to depart on an experience that would bring learning to life. As parents waved goodbye, their children’s faces shone with eagerness and curiosity, ready to dive into California’s rich history at Sutter's Mill and the California state capital, Sacramento.
Hands-On Learning Experiences
This annual field trip is more than just a break from routine; it’s a unique opportunity for our students to engage in hands-on learning. By visiting significant historical sites, our students can see and touch the history they read in textbooks. This immersive experience helps solidify their understanding and appreciation of their study subjects, making learning fun and impactful.
First Stop: Murray Farms
On the way up, the bus stopped at Murray Farms, allowing the students to experience a real working farm in California's Central Valley. They enjoyed a hay ride and bounced around in the giant moon bounce. The farm's diverse activities provided a fun and engaging way to appreciate the region's agricultural importance. The laughter and giggles were priceless, setting the tone for an exciting and educational adventure.
A Night Under the Stars
Arriving at a beautiful campsite along a picturesque lake, the students were thrilled to see the cozy cabins awaiting them. After a hearty dinner, they gathered around a campfire for soulful singing and fun games. The warmth of the fire and the shared experiences fostered a deep sense of camaraderie and friendship. Laughter echoed under the starry sky as they created unforgettable memories, strengthening their bonds and reinforcing the importance of togetherness.
Exploring the Gold Rush Era
Early the following day, the students visited the Coloma Outdoor Discovery School. They explored the area stream where gold was first discovered, hiked through scenic trails, and eagerly panned for gold. Shrieks of delight rang out as some students found gold, vividly bringing the Gold Rush era to life. This hands-on experience helped them appreciate the challenges and triumphs of the 49ers, making history both exciting and tangible.
Fun and Games at Scandia
After a full day of experiences, the students' energy was renewed when the bus parked at Scandia Family Fun Center. The adventure continued with exciting activities that kept the enthusiasm high. Our brave students took on the Sky Screamer, an insanely big spinner that flips and rotates, filling the air with thrilled screams and laughter. The bumper cars brought lots of smiles as the students eagerly took the driver's seat, confidently navigating the course. There were some big wins and countless moments of joy in the arcades. This stop was more than just fun; it was a perfect blend of thrills, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories, highlighting the value of teamwork and shared experiences.
Exploring the State Capital
Last, they visited the California State Capitol. The students learned about the state's legislative process and the history of California’s governance. Meeting the Sacramento Chabad Rabbi and being introduced to Assemblyman Josh Lowenthal from District 69 (Long Beach) was a highlight, especially for our students from Long Beach. This experience brought the concept of government to life, showing the students that it comprises real people with actual values. They gained a personal connection and a more profound understanding that government isn't just a figurative idea but a system driven by individuals who care about their communities.
Fostering a Sense of Community
Beyond the educational benefits, trips like these are crucial in building a strong sense of community among our students.
