5th Grade General Studies
History Comes Alive!
The American Revolution plays a central role in the 5th grade social studies curriculum. For the past few months, students have been learning the causes of the revolution, looking at the events and individuals involved, and researching revolutionary leaders. They also learned how the revolution was fought and won by studying its most important battles (Battle of Yorktown, Battle of Trenton, Battle of Lexington, just to name a few).
This week, the 5th grade class participated in, “Walk Through the American Revolution.” This program was an interactive program where students actively participated in an exciting retelling of our nation’s beginnings, where students were transported back in time to witness the people and events of our past and the students became stars!
Students had a blast getting themselves into character. They recreated battle scenes and learned the depths of courage displayed by both men and women like Deborah Sampson, who spent 4 years pretending to be a man and fighting in the war, or Crispus Attucks, a former slave killed in battle. Students took their roles seriously and really enjoyed portraying their characters.
